The Wizard of Oz at Sphere

One Atrium. Two worlds.

The Atrium becomes part of the film’s world, extending the experience before and after the screening.

Wizard of Oz @ Sphere - Atrium
Wizard of Oz @ Sphere - Atrium

Role at the time: Senior Director, Experiential · Sphere Entertainment

My contribution

As Senior Director, Experiential at Sphere, I led the Atrium experiential work from concept through design and production. My remit brought the physical environment, screen content and interactive encounters together around the guest journey.

The design decision

We gave the same Atrium two distinct environments: an immersive sepia world for ingress, then Emerald City for egress. Returning through the space became a new part of the story.

The design constraint

The Atrium serves both arrival and departure. The experience needed to address those two moments within one physical space, while connecting media, scenery, retail and live performance.

What we delivered

Content across multiple screens; character holograms; set pieces from the film; interactive cameras; immersive merchandise areas; and an interactive live Wizard show. The work developed over more than a year of concepting, design and production.

Selected collaborators

Michael Gizienski, Senior Show Designer, contributed set concepts, LED media boards and interactive photo-op production assets. His project credits list Zack Winokur, Richard Sears and Nick Lange for experiential creative direction. Evolution created holographic and hyperscreen visuals for the Atrium.

Transformers: Autobots Alliance

Give the audience a mission.

Autobots Alliance turns the Transformers universe into an experience people can move through and participate in, connecting character encounters, interactive missions, artifacts and immersive cinema.

Interactive - Make a Transformer
Interactive - Make a Transformer

Role at the time: Senior Creative Director · NEON / CityNeon

My contribution

As Senior Creative Director at NEON / CityNeon, I provided art direction for the experiential concepts. Concept designer Ken Nguyen credits that work directly. I am also credited as director and co-writer on Transformers: Autobots Alliance, alongside writers John Barber and Nicholas Cooper.

The creative approach

The attraction casts visitors as recruits learning to identify Decepticon activity. Training gives the games, character encounters and immersive film a shared purpose: visitors have a role within the story.

Delivery

The experience combines physical environments and artifacts with AR, VR, interactive training and original screen content. Examples shown below include Make a Transformer, Weapon Identifier and Quest to Cybertron.

Scale and collaborators

Ken Nguyen documents a 15,000-square-foot experience with locations in China and South Korea. His experiential concept design sits alongside the work of the wider Hasbro and NEON / CityNeon teams. Screen collaborators include John Barber and Nicholas Cooper.

Hotel Transformania

Make transformation the invitation.

An experiential campaign for Amazon Studios that takes the playful premise of Hotel Transylvania: Transformania into the physical world through mobile activation and takeover environments.

Amazon Studios - Hotel Transylvania Transformania
Amazon Studios - Hotel Transylvania Transformania

Role at the time: Group Creative Director, West · Jack Morton Worldwide

My contribution

I led the experiential creative as Group Creative Director, West at Jack Morton Worldwide for Amazon Studios. The campaign brought the film into public spaces through large-scale inflatables and takeovers, prop-filled pop-ups and a themed bus.

The brief and delivery

Make a streaming release tangible in more than one setting. We used transformation as the connecting idea across mobile and fixed activations, with characters and physical set elements carrying the film into each location.

Recognition

Silver, Clio Entertainment 2022, Theatrical/Film: Out of Home, Takeover. The award entry credits Richard Sears as Group Creative Director at Jack Morton.

Collaborators

Jack Morton: Kristen Villarreal, Account Director; Talia Leyva, Executive Producer; Natalie Sanfilippo, Art Director. The wider campaign credits Amazon Prime Video, AKJOHNSTON Group and Cat/Alina Productions.

Bird Box

A moving billboard outside. A safe house from the film inside.

My role

Executive Creative Director, MC² Experiential Studio. I developed the concept with Senior Creative Producer Melissa Beery after we read the script and Josh Malerman’s novel.

The decision

We paired a promotional double-decker bus with a hidden safe-house experience. The outside advertised the film; inside, visitors stepped into its story.

The constraint

Netflix’s brief called for a moving, location-based billboard. The experience had to work inside a vehicle. We recreated the safe house, covering its windows with newspaper and using blindfolded entry before a short sequence of scares.

Delivery and collaborators

With Melissa Beery and the MC² team, I helped turn the bus interior into the film’s safe house. Evolution handled production and post, including fictional news broadcasts, security feeds and triggered scare content. Jeremy Poindexter is credited for editorial and design.

Published scale

MC² reports six Los Angeles locations followed by Austin, with thousands of visitors over a little more than 30 days. Those are campaign figures reported by the agency, not the film’s streaming audience.
